Third-Party Filament
Save 30-50% without sacrificing print quality.
Can I use third-party filament?
Yes. Any 1.75mm filament works. The RFID is a convenience feature, not a lock-in. Set the filament type manually in Bambu Studio and you'll get identical results at lower cost.
- In Bambu Studio, select the generic profile (Generic PLA, Generic PETG, etc.)
- Set nozzle temperature to the manufacturer's recommendation
- Set bed temperature for your plate type
- Save as a custom filament profile
- On AMS: manually assign the filament type when loading
- Diameter consistency: 1.75mm ± 0.02mm throughout the spool
- Roundness: Oval filament doesn't feed properly
- Moisture content: Dry filament prints better. Look for vacuum-sealed packaging with desiccant
- Winding quality: Tangled spools cause mid-print failures
The most forgiving material for third-party filament. Quality is consistent across brands.
eSUN PLA+ (~$20/kg) is the community go-to. Polymaker PolyTerra for eco-friendly matte finish. Hatchbox is reliable and widely available. Temperature: 190-220°C nozzle, 35-60°C bed.
View on AmazonMore variation between brands than PLA. Sunlu PETG (~$18/kg) is cheap and reliable. Polymaker and eSun also have good options. Temperature: 230-250°C nozzle, 70-85°C bed. Use glue stick on smooth PEI.
View on AmazonRequires enclosed printer (P1S, P2S, X1C, H2S). eSUN ABS+ and Polymaker PolyLite ASA have good community track records. ASA is UV-resistant for outdoor parts. Temperature: ABS 240-260°C, ASA 245-265°C, bed 90-110°C.
Quality varies significantly. Overture TPU 95A (~$24/kg) works well. Print slowly (25-40mm/s). Minimal or no retraction. Works with AMS on most setups.
View on AmazonBambu filament is genuinely good. The RFID auto-configuration is convenient when you're learning. Once you're comfortable manually setting profiles, third-party filament saves money without sacrificing results. Many experienced users use Bambu for specialty colors and third-party for bulk PLA.
