Bambu's Filament Track Switch: What It Actually Does

Short version
The Filament Track Switch is a $59.99 routing box that sits between your AMS units and a dual-nozzle printer. Without it, every AMS is wired to one specific nozzle: the left AMS feeds the left hotend, the right feeds the right. The switch breaks that binding, so the slicer can send a filament to whichever nozzle it wants. It works on the X2D, H2D and H2C, and H2D support arrived with firmware 01.04.00.00 on August 26, 2026. The honest caveat: it is not the universal "any filament to any nozzle" box the product page implies, and owners running large AMS setups report the benefit is narrower than they hoped. The sweet spot is exactly two AMS units.
The problem it solves
On every dual-nozzle Bambu printer before this accessory, the AMS and the hotends had what Bambu's own wiki calls a "fixed binding relationship". Each AMS could only supply the nozzle it was physically plumbed to. That produced two everyday annoyances.
With one AMS connected, the second nozzle had no automated supply at all. In Bambu's words, it "can only be fed manually via an external spool". Half the machine's multi-material capability sat idle unless you hand-fed it.
With two AMS units, the problem shifted from impossible to tedious. If the colour you needed sat in the wrong AMS, you had to "manually adjust the filament position or reconnect the PTFE tube", which Bambu concedes is "cumbersome to operate and easily disrupts the printing process". Anyone who has repacked spools at 11pm because the slicer wanted red on the left knows the feeling.
What it does not do
Here is where the marketing and the reality drift apart. The store page promises that filaments feed "into any nozzle regardless of configuration". Owners who installed it describe something more constrained.
Bambu names one limit itself
From the product page's "Important Notice Before Purchase": with only one AMS connected, the two hotends "support alternate feeding only, not simultaneous feeding. During switching, the AMS must first unload the filament and then reload it." A single AMS plus the switch does not give you two live filament paths. It gives you one path that can change ends, with an unload and reload cycle every time it does.
The second constraint comes from owners rather than the datasheet. You can keep two filaments loaded at once, but as one X2D owner put it, "only if they come from two different inputs into the FTS". The switch has two inlets, and how you group your AMS units across those two inlets still decides what can reach which nozzle. Another owner said it plainly after installing his: "It's not really true that any filament can print to any nozzle."
That distinction sounds academic until you are slicing. One H2C owner described losing a print to exactly this. He assigned two colours to two different nozzles, forgot that both spools sat in AMS units feeding the same switch input, and the job ended up taking as long as if he had never bought the switch.
The resistance problem with engineering filaments
The switch adds another set of PTFE junctions to a path that was already long. Bambu's installation guide is unusually specific about this: keep the tube from AMS to switch under 700 mm, and on the X2D keep switch to buffer under 115 mm. "Shorten the PTFE tube as much as possible to reduce feeding resistance," the wiki says.
At least one owner hit that wall with stiff material. Trying to run PAHT-CF, he reported it "can't even load from AMS HT", and that an older AMS v1 managed it "but with a lot of drag when PLA was flowing through very easily". If your reason for owning a dual-nozzle machine is carbon-filled engineering filament, that is the report to weigh most heavily.
Who it actually helps
Reading the owner reports together, a pattern shows up: the switch is least useful at both ends of the AMS spectrum and most useful in the middle.
Worth the $59.99 if
- You run exactly two AMS units and regularly find the colour you need in the wrong one
- Your multi-colour jobs keep fighting the slicer's nozzle assignment
- You want the second nozzle usable without hand-feeding an external spool
- Shorter load times matter, since filament stages closer to the printer
Skip it if
- You run one AMS: you get alternate feeding only, with an unload and reload on every switch
- You run a large AMS setup and have already sorted materials sensibly by side
- Your work is mostly PAHT-CF and other stiff filaments, where the added path resistance bites
- You mostly print single-colour, single-material jobs
One long-time X2D owner with three AMS units summarised it after weeks of use: "If at all, the FTS makes sense for exactly 2 AMS in my opinion." An H2C owner running eight AMS units was blunter, saying the prints where it helps "are more limited than one might think or hope".
What you need besides the box
The package includes the switch, one 6-pin cable, two 700 mm PTFE tubes, two 400 mm PTFE tubes and six screws, of which only two are needed. What the box does not include, but Bambu's own tool list calls for:
- Two extra 6-pin cables, one per AMS beyond the first
- H1.5 and H2.0 Allen keys
- A printed holder, downloaded from MakerWorld, with a separate model per printer
- For three or more AMS units, a 4-in-1 PTFE adapter. Note that the H2C-specific adapter II is explicitly not compatible with the X2D
Firmware and slicer requirements
The hardware is inert without the software behind it. On the H2D the enabling firmware is 01.04.00.00, released August 26, 2026, which brought the H2 series into line with the X2D. Bambu's release notes list Studio v2.8.1.55 or later and Handy V3.24.0 or later as the matching versions. Our firmware tracker shows the current build for every model.
A fix for a real annoyance, sold with a slightly bigger promise than it keeps
At $59.99 the Filament Track Switch is cheap next to a second AMS, and it genuinely removes the spool-repacking chore that dual-nozzle owners have lived with since the H2D launched. But it is a routing box, not a magic manifold. How you group your AMS units across the two inlets still decides what can reach which nozzle, a single AMS still cannot feed both hotends at once, and stiff filaments may not like the extra path. Buy it if you run two AMS units and regularly fight the left-right split. If you own one AMS, or already run a well-sorted setup, your money is better spent elsewhere.
