Bambu Lab A1 Mini

Should I buy the A1 Mini?

Yes, if you're new to 3D printing and mostly print PLA. It's the easiest, cheapest way into the Bambu ecosystem. If you'll want to print objects larger than 180mm, get the A1 ($399) instead.

The A1 Mini is the best "I've never printed before" answer. Setup takes 20 minutes, first print usually works, automatic calibration handles the rest. The 180mm volume is the main constraint, fine for most hobby prints, limiting for larger projects. If you need more room, the A1 ($399) has 256mm. The AMS Lite combo at $399 adds 4-color printing and is worth it if multi-color interests you.

No enclosure means no ABS/ASA. PLA, PETG, and TPU all work well. For engineering materials, look at the P2S or higher.

Pros

  • Best out-of-box experience under $300
  • Fully automatic calibration
  • Compact, fits on any desk
  • AMS Lite for multi-color
  • Fast for the price
  • Good ecosystem (app, cloud, Orca)

Cons

  • 180mm volume is small
  • No enclosure, no ABS/ASA
  • Bed maxes at 65°C
  • No camera included
  • No HEPA/carbon filter
  • Cloud required by default (LAN workaround exists)

First boot: Run auto-calibration before your first print (~10 minutes). Sets vibration compensation and flow correctly.

LAN mode: Enable LAN Only + Developer Mode in Settings for Orca Slicer. Use the access code and local IP.

Bed adhesion: Textured PEI grips PLA without glue. Clean with IPA before printing. For PETG, use glue stick as release agent.

A1 Mini or A1? Mini for small prints under 180mm. A1 for anything bigger. The $100 difference is worth it if you're unsure.

Do I need the AMS Lite? Not immediately. Start with one spool, add AMS Lite later when you want multi-color. As of October 2025, the A1 Mini also supports the AMS 2 Pro (faster filament changes, 60% quicker swaps) via a firmware update.

Can I use Orca Slicer? Yes. Enable LAN + Developer Mode, connect via IP. Works fully.

Is it loud? ~35 dB in standard mode. Quiet enough to be in the same room.
