MakerWorld Points and Rewards, Explained
Published · MakerWorld, ecosystem · Last updated:
Short version
Upload models to MakerWorld, earn points when people download, print, rate and Boost them. Regular points have no cash value; you spend them in the points store on Bambu Lab gift cards, filament, merchandise and MakerLab credits. Exclusive points (from the Exclusive programs) are the only ones you can cash out: $0.066 per point, once your balance is worth at least $100, minus payment-provider fees. The exact earning formula has been deliberately hidden since June 2025, so anyone promising you "X points per download" is quoting the old system.
The two kinds of points
Everything on MakerWorld hangs on a distinction that trips up most newcomers, because both are just called "points" in casual conversation.
| Regular points | Exclusive points | |
|---|---|---|
| Who earns them | Every creator, on any public model | Only creators in the Exclusive Model Program or the 14-Day Exclusive Launch Program |
| Cash out | No. By policy they "have no cash, monetary, or other inherent value" | Yes: $0.066 per point once your balance reaches $100 (about 1,516 points), via MakerWorld's payout provider |
| Points store | Yes: gift cards, filament, merch, MakerLab credits | Yes, same store, same value per point |
| Per Boost received | 12 points | 15 points |
| The catch | None beyond platform lock-in | Your model must stay MakerWorld-only; leaving the program forfeits points after a grace period |
How you actually earn points
Until mid-2025, MakerWorld published a transparent formula built on downloads and prints, and the community optimized it hard, including download manipulation, print-trading groups and fake engagement. In June 2025 MakerWorld replaced it with a model-based reward system and deliberately stopped publishing the formula, saying downloads and prints "will still count, but they won't be the only yardsticks anymore."
Why every "points calculator" you find is wrong
Any guide, spreadsheet or calculator promising exact points per download describes the pre-June-2025 system. The current algorithm weighs quality signals and engagement, learns continuously, and is intentionally not reverse-engineerable. Treat all per-download numbers as historical.
What still verifiably earns points today:
- Publishing models people download, print and rate: the algorithmic core, formula hidden.
- Boosts: each Boost a user gives your model is worth a flat 12 points (15 if it is an Exclusive model). Boost Tokens themselves cannot be converted to points; users get them for engagement, plus a one-time 2 tokens for binding their first Bambu printer.
- Contests: official and creator-hosted contests pay out published prizes, the one fully transparent earning path. More below.
- Not eligible: crowdfunding projects sit outside the points system entirely. And while exact remix weighting is unpublished, the June 2025 change explicitly aims to stop valuing "a quick tweak" the same as original, skilled work.
What points are worth in practice
For regular points, the store is the only exit. The anchor most people care about is the Bambu Lab store gift card; community reports consistently put it around 490 points for a $40 card, with redemptions taking a few days to approve (both community-reported; the store itself is login-only). That works out to roughly 8 cents per regular point in gift-card value, slightly better than the Exclusive cash rate, which is why many creators in the Exclusive program still spend points on gift cards and only cash out what they cannot spend.
Contests: the one transparent way to earn
Since the regular formula is hidden, contests are the only earning path where the reward is published up front. Two kinds run on the official contests page: official contests, run by MakerWorld itself, often with brand partners and hardware prizes (the current headliner is the Luna Ultra Design Challenge with Bambu Lab × Insta360 and an $11,160 prize pool), and creator-hosted contests run by community members. Entering generally means uploading a model tagged for the contest inside its window; prizes differ per contest, so check the "Theme & Prize" tab before you invest design time. One structural note: crowdfunding projects are excluded from contests, just as they are from the points system.
The Exclusive program: worth it?
Joining the Exclusive Model Program (or the softer 14-Day Exclusive Launch, which locks a model to MakerWorld only for its first two weeks) earns more points per model plus the cash-out option. The price is exclusivity: the model may not be published anywhere else, on pain of forfeiting accumulated Exclusive points after a grace period.
Worth it if
- MakerWorld is already where nearly all your downloads happen
- You want an actual payout path, not just store credit
- Your models fit what the algorithm rewards: original, complex, well-documented
Think twice if
- You also publish on Printables, Thingiverse or Cults3D; exclusivity ends that
- You are far from the $100 minimum; small balances are store-credit-only in practice
- You rely on parametric tools or generator models, which creators report earn poorly under the current system
Taxes on cash rewards are entirely your responsibility, and payment-provider fees come out of your payout. Treat cash-outs like any other platform income when you file.
Since July 2026 the Exclusive program carries one more perk: when an Exclusive model gets stolen and reposted elsewhere, MakerWorld pays a professional copyright agency to file the takedown for you. Eligibility, the application process and the honest limits are in our Copyright Support explainer.
Practical tips that survive the hidden formula
- Quality over volume. The June 2025 change explicitly aims to stop rewarding "fast-print trinkets" over engineered work. Documentation, print profiles and photos are part of the quality signal.
- Enter contests. Published prizes are immune to formula opacity; the official contests page lists what is open. Big ones we cover as news, like the Luna Ultra Challenge.
- Do not buy into points-farming schemes. Download manipulation is exactly what the new system was built to detect, and confiscation of points is written into the policy.
- Redeem early if you print anyway. Gift cards take days to approve; if you know you will buy filament, start the redemption before you need it.
