Prusa INDX vs Bambu AMS & Vortek: Three Ways to Print Many Materials

Short version
Three systems now fight over multi-material printing, and they work in fundamentally different ways. Prusa's INDX is a real tool changer: it swaps whole tools and, per Prusa, wastes about 13 mg per change with no purge. Bambu's H2C with the Vortek system is a semi tool changer: one head that picks one of up to six hotends, so up to 7 materials print purge-free on a standalone machine. Bambu's AMS is the cheap, everywhere option: one nozzle fed by four spools, which means a purge (the familiar "poop") on every change. Honest caveat: the INDX only started shipping in mid-2026 and is not yet widely tested, so its numbers below are Prusa's own. If you already own a Bambu, the AMS is the pragmatic pick. If purge waste is what you hate, the INDX is the one to watch, but it needs a Prusa CORE One under it.
Three approaches, not three versions of the same thing
It is tempting to line these up as cheap, mid, and premium. They are not one ladder. They are three answers to the same question ("how do you print more than one material?") and the answers are mechanically different. That difference decides the waste, the speed, and what you have to buy. Here is the whole picture, then the reasoning.

How each one actually works

The INDX is the interesting one because it does what the AMS structurally cannot: it gives every material its own nozzle. Prusa quotes about 13 mg of waste per change and no purge tower, because there is nothing to flush. It comes in a 4-tool kit ($749) or an 8-tool kit ($999), designed with Bondtech, who invented the smart toolhead and passive tools while Prusa handles integration and PrusaSlicer.
Two honest limits. First, price and platform: the INDX is an upgrade, not a printer. It only mounts on a Prusa CORE One or One+, so the real cost is the kit plus a CORE One underneath it. Second, and more important, it is new. It was shown at Formnext in November 2025 and only began shipping in mid-2026, so the figures above are Prusa's own datasheet numbers, not the result of months of independent testing. The concept is excellent and Prusa's track record is strong, but treat the specifics as claims for now.
Watch the INDX if: you already run a CORE One or want to, purge waste genuinely bothers you, and you are comfortable being an early adopter of a system that is still proving itself.
Bambu H2C with Vortek: purge-free without a tool dock
Bambu's answer sits between the other two. The H2C's head picks one of up to six hotends and heats it inductively in a few seconds, so each hotend keeps its own material and up to 7 print with no purge between them. Push past 7 by chaining an AMS and you are back to purging for the extras. Independent reviews (Tom's Hardware among them) have been fair but pointed: it is "not quite a tool changer," and the Vortek system can feel complex for what most people print.
The catch is that the H2C is a whole printer, not an add-on, and a premium one. The AMS combo lists at $2,399 (on sale for $2,149 until July 15). You are buying into a purge-light workflow at the price of a flagship machine, which only makes sense if multi-material is central to what you do.
Buy the H2C if: you want a Bambu-native, mostly purge-free multi-material workflow on one integrated machine and the flagship price is justified by how much multi-material work you actually do.
Bambu AMS: still the pragmatic default
The AMS is not trying to win the waste argument. At $299 as an add-on to any Bambu printer you already own, it wins the "just works, cheaply, today" argument. Four slots, RFID recognition of Bambu filament, and the ability to chain up to four units for 16 colors. The cost is the purge: every material change flushes the old filament, and light-after-dark changes flush more. For most hobby multi-color printing that waste is an annoyance, not a dealbreaker.
Buy the AMS if: you own a Bambu already, you want multi-color now for the least money, and a bit of purge waste does not ruin your day. This is the right pick for the large majority of Bambu owners.
Which should you pick?
Decide by what you own and what you actually hate.
- You own a Bambu and want multi-color cheaply. The AMS 2 Pro ($299). Nothing else is close on price or convenience, and the purge is livable.
- You want a Bambu-native, mostly purge-free workflow and will pay flagship money. The H2C. One integrated machine, up to 7 materials with no purge.
- You are in the Prusa camp and purge waste is the thing you cannot stand. The INDX, eyes open: newest, most elegant on waste, but early and CORE One only.
The bottom line
These are three philosophies, not three price tiers. The INDX gives every material its own nozzle and pays for it in cost, platform lock-in, and newness. The H2C avoids purge without a dock but is a whole premium printer. The AMS purges on every change and does not care, because it is cheap and it is already on your desk. Pick by mechanism and by what annoys you, and the money mostly sorts itself out. We will revisit the INDX once independent long-term reviews land, since today its best numbers are still Prusa's to prove.
