Belt Tension & Adjustment
Keep your motion system precise.
How tight should the belts be?
Run Settings ? Calibration ? Vibration Compensation on your printer. Target: 110–150 Hz for both X and Y axes. Both Y belts should be within 10 Hz of each other.
How to check belt tension
Your printer has a built-in test that measures belt tension via vibration frequency. This is the most accurate method.
| Printer | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| X1C / P1S / P2S | Settings ? Calibration ? Vibration Compensation |
| A1 / A1 Mini | Settings ? Maintenance ? Belt |
Target frequencies
| Range | Meaning |
|---|---|
| <100 Hz | Too loose. Layer shifts, ghosting, poor accuracy. |
| 110–150 Hz | Ideal range. Good tension. |
| >160 Hz | Too tight. Bearing wear, motor strain. |
Y-axis: check both belts
The Y-axis has two belts (one per side). If they differ by more than 10 Hz, prints come out skewed (parallelogram instead of rectangle).
- Power off the printer
- Open the side/front panel for access
- Find the belt tensioner (small sliding block or screw at the end of each axis)
- X-axis: loosen locking screw, adjust tensioner, retighten
- Y-axis: adjust both tensioners equally to maintain matched tension
- Move the axis by hand to check for smooth movement
- Power on, run the vibration test to verify
- Repeat until within 110–150 Hz
- Find the tensioner screws on the back/side (no disassembly needed)
- Clockwise = tighter, counter-clockwise = looser
- Small adjustments only (1/4 turn at a time)
- Run the belt test after each adjustment to verify
Pluck the belt like a guitar string:
- Dull thud: Too loose. Tighten.
- Low twang (bass note): Good.
- High ping: Too tight. Loosen.
This is a rough method. Use the built-in test when possible.
- Visible cracking, fraying, or missing teeth
- Belt has been significantly over-tensioned (stretched/delaminated)
- Tension keeps dropping between checks (belt has stretched past recovery)
GT2 belts are a consumable. Expect replacement every 1–2 years on heavily-used printers. Bambu sells replacements; generic GT2 6mm belt is identical.
| Too loose | Too tight |
|---|---|
| Layer shifting | Bearing wear |
| Dimensional errors | Motor strain |
| Ringing/ghosting | Excessive ringing |
| Inconsistent prints | Premature belt wear |
Quick reference
| <100 Hz | Too loose |
| 110–150 Hz | Ideal |
| >160 Hz | Too tight |
